Dear Elder Grandson,
A new year, a new beginning! Hope you had a great New Year week.
It has been so cold and wet here that we just stay in the house to keep warm.
Grandpa has had a cold for a few days but seems to be getting better. I
probably will get it next.
Larry had a New Years Eve party and we went over there. They
had food, karaoke and a big fire. Not as many people came this year but
it was okay. We stayed till eleven o'clock. We went to bed right at midnight
with a lot of fireworks going off. New Years Day we had our cabbage and
black eyed peas for good luck and money. What is the tradition in Washington?
We didn't have one in Idaho.
We have doctor appointments again this next week. I guess
when you get our age you just eat, sleep and go to doctors! Not much is going
on here but W I N T E R. I see where you are having rain today and tomorrow and
then a few days with none. We are as cold as you are or some days colder.
I am sending a picture of Elder Smith here in our ward
that has been here twice from my Iphone. He is being transferred on
Tuesday. His mannerism reminds me of you, he always has a smile and a real go
getter. He has nine months before he goes home. He is on a bike in Bridge
City which is a big challenge. Grandpa keeps the meal calendar going to be sure
all three sets of Elders are being fed. They really appreciate it.
We sang a song in sacrament this morning that made me think of
you. It's entitled "The Time Is Far Spent" it is on page 266 in the
Hymn Book. I think it is a good one for missionaries but also for
all fellow men. "Shrink not from your duty however unpleasant, But follow
the Savior, your pattern and friend. Our little afflictions, though painful at
present, Ere long with the righteous, in glory will end. Ere long, with the
righteous, in glory will end." Your mission may be hard, as is life
itself, but it will be worth it in the end if we follow the Savior. You have
done an excellent mission and we are so proud of you. We are praying you don't
have a bike area again, but you can do what needs to be done no matter
what. Just remember we are praying for you each day.
We love you lots,
Grandpa & Grandma
